Tonik Health Insurance

Tonik Health Insurance is offered through Anthem Blue Cross and offers three, high deductible, low cost managed care plans. Although anyone under the age of 65 can buy a policy, the plans target a relatively young, 18 to 29 year-old buyer who is likely to be less concerned with health insurance than an older, married customer base. The relatively low cost plans also provide a possible individual health insurance solution for the young, self-employed work force.

The Anthem, Tonik plans are currently offered in only six states, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Hampshire, Georgia, and Connecticut. The costs of the plans vary depending on your state of residence and on which of the three plans you choose. However, the policies may be applied for online, and instant approval can be granted for qualified applicants.

So, what are the three plans that Tonik offers and what are the options for coverage? The plans, with a younger client base in mind, are named,

  1. Thrill-Seeker
  2. Part-Time Daredevil
  3. Calculated Risktaker

The Tonik Thrill-Seeker plan carries a deductible of $5000, the Part-Time Daredevil a deductible of $3000, and the Calculated Risktaker a deductible of $1500. All three of the plans share a $10,000 out of pocket maximum per calendar year and have a lifetime maximum payout of $5,000,000.

For benefits such as inpatient and outpatient services, you would first pay your deductible before Tonik starts paying for covered health care. When you have met the out of pocket maximum for the calendar year, then Tonik pays in full for all covered services. To fully understand exactly what the covered services are and under what conditions Tonik pays or may not pay, be sure to read the "fine print" and consult a company representative.

For the Tonik Thrill-Seeker and Part-Time Daredevil, you are allowed 4 physician office visits without paying deductible. You also do not pay deductible for Generic drugs, preventive dental care, and vision care. In the Calculated Risktaker plan, you are allowed unlilmited physician office visits without paying deductible, and deductible does not apply to generic drugs and vision care. It is also important to understand that although Tonik pays on generic medications, there is no coverage whatsoever for brand name drugs.

Basic services Tonik health insurance covers include,

According to company literature on vision coverage, available at tonikplans.com,

"Vision does not require a copay or deductible. Tonik will reimburse you for $50 for routine eye exams, regular glasses, or contact lenses no matter where you go for these services. Want more? Tonik will also cover up to $100 for your basic glasses or $80 for contacts every two years when you use the BlueView Vision Network. In addition when you use the BlueView Vision network you'll pay only $25 for most eyeglass lenses. With the BlueView Vision network, you can go to certain independent optometrist or stores like LensCrafters at the local mall."

If you live in one of the six states mentioned above, Tonik coverage may provide a relatively low cost health insurance that will meet your needs. Tonik also offers what it call the Bluecard program that allows coverage throughout the United States. However, be sure to read the policy coverage details carefully and to get your questions answered from an authorized, Tonik representative before making any decisions.
